In Loving Memory of Don M. Turner
September 25, 1936 ~ April 12, 2011
Don passed following a brief illness at St John's Regional Medical Center. He had been admitted to St John's for the treatment pneumonia secondary to influenza. Despite the excellent care provided by St John's, he was unable to overcome his illness.

Although Don had been recently dealing with a number of health issues, his overall health had been very good and his passing has come as a shock to us all. He will will be dearly missed by his family, friends, fellow volunteers, and his Seabee family at large.
Memorial service was held on Saturday, April 23rd, at Channel Islands Vineyard Christian Fellowship in Oxnard, California.
En lieu of flowers the family is requesting that donations be made to the following:

For Grandpa From Nicole

There once was a man…

There once was a man with a gleam in his eye and a smile on his face,
This man could make laughter abound in any place

This man would say “hoo rah” and always “can do,”
And his precious Seabee family would agree with that too

He would tell us kids to hurry up and muckahi man,
To step in line and take a stand

He would serenade you with Elvis songs anywhere,
And he always wanted to be your loving teddy bear

He stood as tall and as powerful as a great oak tree,
And flew through life as a great Seabee

This man loved his family more than words can express,
And we loved him back with absolutely no less

When he came into a room, everyone stopped,
He had a commanding presence that can’t be topped

This man would fly like a Seabee and sing like a bird,
And we always hung on his every word

From the basics of training to the jungles of Nam,
All over the world, to the shores of Guam

He Proved the motto “We Build, We Fight,”
In all of his actions, day and night

There once was a man that was so precious to me,
He was my amazing Grandpa and always will be

There once was a man that died one day,
An angel took him and they flew away

There once was a man that reached that pearly gate,
And those left behind weren’t ready for that date

But orders came down from heaven above,
For a final deployment, written in love

Command Master Chief a big “Hoo Rah”, job well done,
You fought the good fight and the battle is won

The Greatest Man in My Life...My Dad!

Dearest Friends...I would like to share the man in my life that transformed who I am. He showed me that parents are human, but they love unconditionally. I did not become close to my dad until I was in my thirties when I let go of judgment and let him into my heart I found a man that walked and talked the example of how much God loves us and how unending is the depth of his heart! He had so much faith not only in God but in his beautiful wife Linda...Mom...and in each of his children.

His laughter was infectious we laughed at the silliest things we laughed with each other. We shared our most heartfelt thoughts, the things that were most difficult in our lives, we consoled each other, encouraged each other and comforted each other. I am so privileged to have had him for my father to know his unconditional love, to have seen over and over his example of faith and strength. The love and commitment he had for Mom and her for him is one of the most precious gifts they gave each of us eight children.

My fondest memories the few I had as a little girl were making deluxe tuna fish sandwiches in a tiny little kitchen, another is singing, yes my Elvis Dad sang "Yes Jesus Loves Me". We sang "What Child Is This". My childhood memories were good and some bad but we forgave each other building a relationship of love, trust, faith, compassion knowing that I was truly Daddies little girl. Yet when we talked about my brothers and sisters I knew he had that same kind of perfect relationship, perfect love with them as well. He spoke of his love for them, how proud he was of each one nearly every time we spoke. What a wonderful gift to reach out to each of us knowing how to touch our lives understanding each personality so individually.

I have often said and I told him that I could only hope to be even a part of the rock of strength, the example and the parent he is. He was always giving not only of his heart but of his time to all who asked. His graceful endurance of physical pain and emotional hardships that come with the love of his children will always be with me. Through that he gave me a lifetime of wisdom. Never give up and love your children as God loves you.

Thank you Dad for everything but mostly thank you for being my Dad for being my Best friend! And God Thank you for gifting to me him, for bringing him home through many wars proudly giving 38 years of service to his country. I have been blessed. My memories are now rich.

Thank you everyone for you love prayers and support through this difficult time for my family.

I was reading your posts this morning, and tears started rolling again, but your last post about giving up the anger you had when you became close to Dad in your 30's, made me remember how sad I was when Dad left, but also reminded me of how blessed I was. I was one that he chose to be part of his family, and I was very blessed to have those years, and God knew what he was doing, because Dad helped me become the woman and mother that I am today. I was out of town when I got the phone calls, and trying to keep my mind on my work, but God has a way of watching over us, my friend/boss was with me, and helped me through the sadness, the guilt, and telling me to tell him how much I loved him and the little girl got on the phone and was able to tell him those things.

I love you, and I wanted to be with all of the family during this hard time, but was not able too. As I was sitting there, I wanted to call Zanna and you, and I have no phone numbers on me, shame on me.

As I was driving home late yesterday afternoon, I reflected on all the good times I had growing up, and one of the precious memories I had with Dad, was the bee he had on his arm for the Seabees, and I remember walking up to touch it, and Dad would act like he did not see me coming, and he would pinch me, telling me that the bee got me!! That made me smile.

I love you and I am blessed that God saw that he put us all together years ago.
